Guys,

Is a Motorola MU21CV two way radio compatible with the standard two way radios that is used by the team. The MU21CV is an older but very solid two way, programmable over 40 channels.

The state and our team currently utilize FRS/GMRS frequencies due to the lack of a need to buy FCC licenses and easy to afford radios widely accessible to general population.

If your radio is capable of working in the frequency ranges of FRS/GMRS you are good to go buy just programing it in. If not, don't be discourage and hang onto those radios and gear for never know what we be going to in near future and your accessories might be compatible with the next radios as well.

I think I will be good with thuse units. I have 4 total and two automatic headsets.

Halo, I got these units years ago when we went snow skiing all the time. They are solid as a rock. Motorola stopped making them a while back but you can still get parts for them.

Is your radios VHF or UHF and what band width are they operating in?

Just curious for NCAO and everyone that uses the FRS/GMRS radios all violate FCC regulations for GMRS frequencies requires a FCC GMRS User License.

But their are a few general use frequencies that do not require the need for licenses.

Here is an artical I found concerning FRS radios. These are the type radios you would typically but from Wal Mart / Bass Pro Shop...... If you read the instructions that come with the radio you will probably find out if that particular radio requires to be registered.

"Family Radio Service (FRS) is one of the Citizens Band Radio Services. It is used mostly by families to communicate within a neighborhood and while on group outings and has a communications range of less than one mile. You can not make a telephone call with an FRS unit. You may use your FRS unit for business-related communications.

FRS license documents are neither needed nor issued. You are provided authority to operate a FRS unit in places where the FCC regulates radio communications as long as you use only an unmodified FCC certified FRS unit. An FCC certified FRS unit has an identifying label placed on it by the manufacturer. There is no age or citizenship requirement. "

This is basically saying no FCC regulations to FRS.

However in the case of the raidos I have, they do require registration and are registered. If I recall correctly it was simply filling out a card that came with the radio and mailing it in with a registration fee. Don't recall how much it was. The registration was a one time thing and is valid for either 10 or 15 years can't remember what. Basically the life of a typical radio. The M series radio are UHF and programmable. They can be set to over 40 different frequencies of which overlap in the FRS and GMRS ie ( business band frequencies ). So I still think we will be good with these units.

Doc is correct there are several general frequencies buth VHF & UHF that do not require registration. I know the number of frequiencies was increased a while back in order to increase retail sales of these units.

Meh, I live by the credo "Its always easier to ask for forgivness than for permission"...so long as were not abusing the airways I don't see a need to get a license. Were not using them for commercial usage and/or using them in a way that would interfere with other people using them.

I would say price is a factor, but I would bet that if people could see how durable they are and how they outperform the cheaper radios, people will use them.
